The outgoing State Minister of ICT and National Guidance, Kabyanga Godfrey Baluku Kiima, has emphasized the importance of digital literacy for Uganda’s youth. Kabyanga urged secondary school students to dedicate efforts towards developing their digital skills, highlighting that the country’s development now heavily depends on online platforms and technology.
He noted that it’s essential that students embrace digital skills because no government program today runs manually, adding that t future is digital and they must be prepared. He also announced the launch of a nationwide digital skilling program to equip students with the necessary technological knowledge.
As part of this initiative, a one-week training session was officially opened at Kasese Secondary School, attracting students from various schools within the district. Hon Kabyanga emphasized that even smartphones are computers, and students should not wait for laptops to start engaging with digital tools.
Wilbert Bwire from the Ministry of ICT confirmed that the ministry is working tirelessly to ensure that Ugandans acquire vital knowledge about new and emerging technologies. He said the Ministry’s goal is to make digital literacy accessible to all, as it is key to national development.
Angela Masika, a senior two student at Kasese High School, says the training is a huge opportunity for her, since she dreams of being an influential digital content creator. However, she appealed to the Ministry of ICT to provide her school with more computers for learners to practice.
Over hundreds of students from different schools are expected to participate in the week-long training at Kasese Secondary School, focusing on how to effectively use computers and digital applications to enhance learning and future opportunities. Kabyanga said the initiative underscores Uganda’s commitment to building a digitally skilled generation ready to compete in the modern world-URN.
