Schoolchildren in Nabilatuk District made a disturbing discovery on Sunday morning when they came across the body of a 55-year-old man in a garden about one kilometre from his home in Natirae Village, Natirae Sub-county. The deceased, identified as Joseph Loumo, a peasant and resident of the same village, is suspected to have died by suicide.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear, including what may have prompted him to leave his home and end up in the garden. The children alerted local leaders, who informed the area LC I and LC III chairpersons. The matter was subsequently reported to police at Lolachat Sub-county.
Police visited the scene, documented the circumstances and transported Loumo’s body to Nabilatuk Health Centre IV, where a postmortem examination was conducted. Mike Longole, the Mt Moroto Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the body had been handed over to the deceased’s relatives for burial.
Longole said police had registered a case of suspected suicide at Lolachat Sub-county Police Station and were still investigating the circumstances surrounding Loumo’s death. He added that the police file would be submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal opinion after the inquiries are completed.
Longole appealed to members of the public facing distress to seek psychosocial support from local leaders, health workers and other trusted support systems. “We appeal to the public to seek psychosocial support and guidance from local leaders and health workers in times of distress,” Longole said-URN.
