The Inspectorate of Government is investigating alleged payment of salaries to ghost workers on the Kabale District local government payroll.
On Thursday, five officials from the Inspectorate, including investigators and detectives, searched the office of the District Principal Human Resource Officer at the district headquarters.
The officials arrived at about midday and spent more than three hours examining files, computers and other materials in the office.
The District Principal Human Resource Officer, Jacinta Tushabomwe, was not in the office when the officials arrived.
One of the investigators confirmed that they were conducting an investigation but declined to provide details, saying the matter was still under investigation and would be communicated to the media after the process is completed.
Retired Major Godfrey Katamba, the Kabale Resident District Commissioner, confirmed that the Inspectorate of Government is investigating allegations that government salaries were paid to ghost workers through the office of the Principal Human Resource Officer.
Katamba said district authorities are also investigating alleged irregularities in the payroll.
He said the Inspectorate of Government has been investigating the alleged payroll irregularities and payment of salaries to ghost workers for about one month.
Katamba said the district authorities would await the findings of the Inspectorate of Government investigations and that anyone found responsible would face the law.
He said Kabale District Local Government has about 4,000 employees on the government payroll. The search of the Principal Human Resource Officer’s office was still ongoing by press time-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
