Joint security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have intensified efforts to combat crime and ensure public safety during the Easter celebrations. Christians around the world are commemorating Easter as the resurrection of Jesus Christ, three days after his crucifixion and death.
According to the security forces, preparations have been finalized, with several measures outlined to prevent crime and address potential threats during the festive period. Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, said security operations are being reinforced through collaboration with sister forces, including the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF). The joint teams will conduct both foot and motorized patrols across the region.
Longole noted that during festive seasons, people tend to relax, overindulge in alcohol, and lower their guard, which criminals exploit to break into homes and steal property. He emphasized that although the current security situation is relatively calm, the public should remain vigilant.
He further urged the public to avoid excessive drinking and to take personal responsibility for their safety, noting that security personnel may not be present in all areas. He called for community cooperation to support the security efforts and ensure a peaceful Easter holiday.
In a related development, security forces recovered five firearms last week during operations in the districts of Kaabong and Kotido. Two guns were recovered in Kaabong and three in Kotido, following intelligence-led operations. Longole said they are continuing to track individuals suspected of illegal possession of firearms, whose names are already on the security watchlist.
He noted that the disarmament exercise is ongoing, with the community gradually responding positively to the voluntary program. According to Longole, many former warriors have returned from the bush and surrendered their weapons, motivated by government incentives and development programs.
He observed that initiatives like the Parish Development Model have encouraged warriors to reintegrate into their communities. Longole also reminded the public that the presidential amnesty remains in effect and urged those still holding illegal firearms to take advantage of the opportunity and hand them over-URN.
