Recently, Dr. Ali Damani resigned from his well-paying job at Makerere medical school to be able to compete for Kyadondo east MP seat on the NUP ticket. He feels Nkunyingi Muwadda hasn’t been a good MP.
However, even when he is the family doctor for Kyagulanyi’s family whose members have for years been getting medication from his capital medicals clinic in Kasangati, it has become clear that Damani won’t be getting the NUP flag. It’s for Muwadda who Kyagulanyi still likes.
Damani who was among the first 35 founders of people power is now furious that the gentleman’s agreement, whereby he was in 2021 told to allow Muwadda to take the seat since he had been standing there before, has been violated by party top leaders.
He has realized that secretary general Rubongoya hates him personally because they competed for the position of executive secretary when it was still people power-before it became NUP party.
A few days ago, Damani looked for Kyagulanyi at Kavule and when he failed to meet him, he resorted to making phone calls. He rang several times and the principal didn’t pick. It’s now two weeks of daily calls and texting, all of which Kyagulanyi has ignored and not responded to.
Damani is now angry and not prepared to step down for Muwadda with his NUP card and he is determined to stand as a NUP-afilliated independent.
Sources near him say that he has even already printed his posters to use as an independent and this will weaken Muwadda and might create room for NRM to get the seat because the NUP opposition vote is generally going to be split up and divided a lot because FDC’s Apollo Kantinti is also standing and others.
