Two security guards have been arrested by the police after a burglary at Asuret Seed Secondary School in Soroti District on Wednesday.
The guards, identified as Simon Okiria and Francis Alomu, were on duty on the night of Tuesday, when thieves cut through the school’s fence and broke into the ICT laboratory. Their arrest, along with that of one community member, marks the first step in an investigation into a crime that has struck the school as it prepares for the Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) exams in weeks.
The assailants made off with four complete computers, eight Central Processing Units (CPUs), and a school projector, leaving a significant void in the school’s resources.
This has left the school in crisis as they prepare 170 candidates to sit for UCE exams beginning next month. The school, with a total enrollment of 1,033 students, now has only 17 computers left.
”This situation has set the school back at a critical time,” said Head Teacher Tamali Ikengo. “It has left us with a substantial gap in our capabilities when we needed those computers the most.”
Preliminary investigations indicate that the thieves broke the angle bars of the window to access the lab.
Ikengo says that the school had previously appealed to the district for help to construct a perimeter fence.
The guards were transferred to Katine, the Soroti District Police headquarters, on Friday.
