As the world commemorates World Press Freedom Day today, journalists across the Greater Luwero region — covering Luwero, Nakaseke, and Nakasongola districts — have been urged to prioritize professionalism in their coverage of Uganda’s 2026 general elections.
According to the Revised Summary Roadmap for the 2025/2026 General Elections published by the Electoral Commission (EC), the electoral process began with the demarcation of constituencies and electoral areas, and the reorganization of polling stations between August 6th and 16th, 2024.
Currently, the display of the National Voters’ Register at each polling station is ongoing and will continue until May 8th, 2025, in accordance with Sections 24(1) and 25(1) of the EC Act. The same revised roadmap, dated July 30th, 2024, and signed by EC Chairperson Justice Simon Byamukama, indicates that polling for presidential, parliamentary, and local government elections — including elections for Special Interest Group (SIG) representatives — will take place between January 12th and February 9th, 2026, in line with Article 61(2) of the Constitution.
While addressing journalists as they joined colleagues nationwide to mark World Press Freedom Day, Rose Namayanja Nsereko, Deputy Secretary General of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), emphasized the importance of professionalism and fairness in election coverage.
In an interview with Uganda Radio Network (URN), Namayanja congratulated journalists on their special day and urged them to ensure balanced reporting to help Ugandans make informed voting decisions.
Namayanja also encouraged journalists, acknowledging the modest pay many receive, to take advantage of government poverty alleviation programs like Emyooga to improve their livelihoods.
Her call was echoed by Luwero Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Richard Bwabye, who urged journalists to perform their duties objectively as the country heads into the election season. Bwabye emphasized the importance of exposing societal ills and holding leaders accountable through fair reporting.
He also commended journalists for helping leaders reflect on their actions and promoting accountability.
In celebration of World Press Freedom Day, journalists from Greater Luwero have organized a commemorative event at St. Anthony Primary School playground in Nakasongola District.
Musa Lwanga, President of the Greater Luwero Journalists’ Association (GLJA) and a reporter at Radio Simba, said all journalists in the region are invited to attend the festivities, which will start at 9:00 a.m.
