Police have confirmed that four people were killed and six others injured in a motor vehicle accident in Rukungiri District. The crash occurred last night in Murambo Village,  Nyakagyeme Sub-county, when a Toyota Isuzu truck, registration number UBK 931A, collided with a Bajaj Boxer motorcycle carrying a boda boda rider and a passenger.

According to Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, the truck was travelling from Rwengyiri Catholic Parish in Bugangari Sub-county towards Nyakibale Catholic Parish in Rukungiri Municipality. The occupants of the truck were reportedly travelling to Nyakibale to attend a youth conference.

Tumushime said that upon reaching Murambo Village, the driver lost control of the vehicle and rammed into the motorcycle before the truck overturned.

Three people died at the scene, while a fourth victim succumbed to injuries, bringing the death toll to four. The deceased have been identified as Bridget Nahurira, 14, Tito Muhereza, 20, Praise, 16, and Viani, 15.

The six injured victims are Godfrey Tumusiime, 16, Monica Akampulira, 18, Scovia Kansiime, 18, Viani Nanshaba, 16, Benjamin Turyagumanawe, 18, and Proscovia Nayebare, 17. The injured were rushed to Nyakibale Hospital, where they are receiving treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were taken to Rwakabengo Health Centre III for postmortem examinations.

Police have launched investigations to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the factors that may have caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

Tumushime cautioned motorists to observe speed limits and ensure that their vehicles are in good mechanical condition before setting off, noting that reckless driving and poorly maintained vehicles can increase the risk of fatal road crashes-URN.
