An education awareness and resource mobilization campaign aimed at increasing access to education for vulnerable children has been launched in Katakwi District, with local leaders and education advocates calling on communities to support orphans, school dropouts and children from underprivileged families.
The initiative seeks to mobilize resources to enable more vulnerable children to enrol in and complete their education while raising public awareness about the importance of investing in the future of disadvantaged learners. The campaign was launched on Saturday during a community run held at the Katakwi District headquarters.
The event was organized by the Katakwi Students Development Forum (KASDF) in partnership wSet featured imageith education supporters. According to KASDF founding chairperson Daniel Oonyi, many children in Katakwi are unable to attend school because their families cannot afford scholastic materials and other basic educational requirements.
Oonyi said KASDF, a community-based organization established in 2019 with about 20 active members, has been supporting vulnerable children from primary through secondary school and currently sponsors five learners.
The campaign attracted district leaders and professionals who used the event to encourage young people to embrace education. Dr. Francis Inangolet, the Principal Production Officer for Moroto District and a native of Katakwi, urged students to remain disciplined, work hard, and consider technical and vocational education as a pathway to a better future.
Katakwi District LCV Chairperson Godfrey Omolo appealed to parents, well-wishers, and leaders to support vulnerable children’s education, revealing that the district council will discuss mechanisms to sponsor at least two disadvantaged children.
He cited Katakwi Sub-county as an example, saying it has already supported two vulnerable learners, and pledged to champion KASDF’s initiative through the district council by supporting the development of bylaws and, eventually, an ordinance to strengthen community support for disadvantaged children.
Omolo added that the district has documented cases of vulnerable children who require assistance to remain in school.
Participants, including Katakwi District Youth Councillor Samuel Akorimo and NRM Youth Chairperson Patrick Itori, commended KASDF for promoting education and urged young people to stay in school and avoid activities that could jeopardize their future-URN.
