Police in Mukono have arrested the driver involved in the fatal train-bus crash that claimed the life of a teacher from Mwebaza High School, Kakiri.
Traffic Police Spokesperson, Michael Kananura identified the suspect as Christopher Kikomeko, who was arrested over the weekend, after 51 days on the run since the fatal July 10, 2026, crash.
The crash occurred at Namumira-Bukasa Village along Katosi Road, when a Friendship Coaches bus carrying students of Mwebaza High School to Jinja for an educational trip was struck by a train while attempting to cross a railway line, against different warnings and an order to stop which the bus driver defied, leading to death and injuries. One female teacher died on the spot while several students sustained injuries.
“You remember there was a police officer who tried to stop him but he did not stop and he crashed into the train that was coming,” Kananura said. “We have been looking for him, until last night at around 11: 00 pm, through our intelligence we managed to get him in Mukono. He will be taken to court this week.”
Police said that following investigations, Kikomeko is expected to face 44 counts including 1 count of reckless driving, 1 count of causing death by reckless driving, 40 counts of causing bodily injury and 1 count of causing damage to a railway train.
The arrest comes after a Black July for school trips that later forced government to suspend all school trips countrywide. Just days after the Mukono incident, a bus carrying 73 students of St. Paul Secondary School, Katakwi District, rammed into a stationary trailer in Bugweri District along the Iganga highway.
Then on July 16, the deadliest crash happened at Chekwatit Hill along the Kapchorwa-Mbale Road. An Isuzu bus Reg. No. UA 108BQ carrying pupils of King David Junior School from Sipi Falls overturned while descending the slope, instantly killing 24 people including 23 pupils and injuring over 20 others. Police blamed it on mechanical failure-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
