The death toll from the devastating mudslide in Bulambuli District has now risen to 31, with more casualties feared as recovery efforts continue. The landslide, which struck Buluganya and Sooti sub-counties, buried homes and trapped families under thick debris, leaving many devastated and hundreds displaced.
Search operations, led by the local community and supported by over 300 UPDF soldiers, continue with the aid of an excavator that arrived on Sunday. This equipment has significantly improved the ability to sift through mud and debris more effectively.
Rodgers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, confirmed that the search is ongoing. On December 6, the body of 7-year-old Woniala David from Namakyele village was recovered, followed by the retrieval of 65-year-old Woniala Paul, a peasant from Masugu village, on December 7. Authorities continue to evacuate residents from high-risk areas as the recovery operation presses on, and the full extent of the casualties remains uncertain-URN.
