Members of Parliament from the Bunyoro sub-region have rallied the business community and other people in the area to prepare strategically for the business opportunities expected to accrue from the African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027.
According to the legislators, the AFCON tournament will attract hundreds of visitors who will flock the region and will require various services to be offered to them. They say the visitors will require accommodation, food, transport, health care and entertainment among others rallying the locals to invest in various ventures as they position themselves to tap into the opportunities.
The MPs have appealed to local business owners to prioritise improving and standardizing their services in the areas of accommodation, hotels, food, restaurants and transport.
Steven Aseera Itaza, the Buhaguzi East Member of Parliament in Kikuube emphasized that local business owners must prioritize improving and standardizing their services noting that they should be unique as they serve the AFCON visitors.
Pius Wakabi Rujumba, the Bugahya County Member of Parliament, commended the government for the current infrastructure development in the region ahead of AFCON and encouraged local businesses to position themselves strategically to benefit from the economic opportunities that will be generated during the AFCON tournament.
Kenneth Kiiza Nyendwoha, the Bujenje County MP in Masindi urged the locals to prepare and position themselves to tap into opportunities from the AFCON warning that residents in the region should not just sit and see, but rather “invest in hotels, transport, accommodation, logistics and security among other services” as well as supplying food to benefit from the tournament.
Beatrace Wembabazi, the Hoima Woman Member of Parliament urged locals to jealously take advantage of the business opportunities that will emerge from the tournament.
As part of the preparedness for the AFCON tournament, the government has constructed a multi-billion magnificent Hoima City stadium to host some of the games in 2027.
The Government contracted SUMMA to construct the 20,000-seater multi-purpose stadium in preparation for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Located in Kyarwiru Cell, Hoima East Division, the stadium is among the venues selected to host matches during the 2027 AFCON, which Uganda will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.
The modern facility sits on 34 acres of land and meets FIFA and CAF standards.
Construction of the facility cost 129 million US dollars and was fully financed through Uganda’s Petroleum Fund, which is supported by revenues from the country’s oil and gas resources.The stadium’s international standards position it to host major continental events, drawing players, officials, media, and fans to the region.
The stadium features VVIP sections, an indoor arena, a swimming pool, modern changing rooms with gyms, volleyball and basketball courts, media conference halls, a hybrid turf, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) room, FIFA and CAF offices, referee rooms, training grounds, a media gallery, and parking space for nearly 1,000 vehicles among others-URN.
