Bulembia Division leaders in Kasese Municipality are calling for more action to contain the growing spate of teenage pregnancies in the area.
Reports indicate that Kasese district is the leading in the country with over 7,000 teenage pregnancy cases recorded in 2023.
Over 600 cases of teenage pregnancies have been recorded in Kasese Municipality this year alone according to available statistics from health facilities in the area.
Abdul Magezi, the Bulembia Division Community Development Officer-CDO says many young girls below the age of 18 years engage in sex due to poverty, domestic violence, bad peer pressure and cults which led to pregnancies.
He adds that the availability of cheap accommodation has seen an increase in the population with many of the young girls taking advantage of this population to engage in relationships for survival.
Magezi also notes that the division is also grappling with a surge in defilement cases with at least not less than 10 cases being reported each month.
Richard Bomera, the Bulembia Division LC III Chairperson observes the need for parents to take full responsibility for the health growing of their children.
The District Senior Community Development Officer, Queen Gonda Asiimwe noted that at least 34 women and girls out of 100 have been abused in Kasese and the majority of these are young mothers.
She wants political, cultural and religious leaders to come out in arms and advocate against teenage pregnancies-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
