Bugema University in Luwero District has announced plans to invest in an aviation program through the acquisition of aircraft, aimed at providing training for students and supporting emergency medical response operations. According to university officials, the aircraft will be deployed to assist in the evacuation and treatment of road accident victims in critical condition.
Statistics from the police indicate that Uganda recorded 25,107 road traffic crashes in 2024, up from 23,608 in 2023 — an increase of 6.4%. The announcement was made on Sunday by Dr. Israel Kafeero, Vice Chancellor of Bugema University, during the institution’s 31st graduation ceremony under the theme: “Empowered for Excellence; Serving with Purpose” at its main campus in Luwero. A total of 1,779 graduates received their academic awards.
Dr. Kafeero revealed that officials from the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority (UCAA) have already visited the university and confirmed that it meets the basic requirements to run the aviation program. Plans are also underway to construct a runway to facilitate both training and emergency operations.
During the same ceremony, Pr. Samuel Kajoba, head of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Uganda, was installed as the new Chancellor, succeeding Dr. Maka Moses, who recently retired. In his inaugural address, Pr. Kajoba urged graduates to use their knowledge and skills to make a positive impact on society, reminding them not to keep their abilities as ornaments but to transform the world and leave a legacy.
Quoting the late Nelson Mandela, he said: “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” Pr. Kajoba encouraged graduates to view professionalism as a form of service, emphasizing that the true value of education lies in how it benefits others.
