The Rt. Rev. Michael Okwii Esakhan, Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Kumi has directive schools established by the Church of Uganda to stop formal dance parties commonly known as proms.
The directive comes as learners prepare for their final examinations.
He made the directive as part of his sermon at the dedication ceremony for Senior Four and Senior Six candidates at Mukura Memorial SS in Ngora District on Friday.
Bishop Esakhan stated that these events must come to an end in all Church of Uganda schools, emphasizing that this aligns with national educational policy.
“Foster a spirit of perseverance in your quest for success,” he encouraged the students. “Set aside any distractions. Engaging in activities like prom can lead us down a path of self-destruction, and this should not continue in our schools,” he asserted.
His warning follows reports that some schools under the Church of Uganda have been arranging prom dances as part of the farewell parties. He said such events are not endorsed by the Ministry of Education.
He urged the candidates preparing for their examinations to embody qualities of perseverance, persistence, and dedication in pursuit of their goals.
He underscored the importance of remaining steadfast in prayer and taking positive actions, while avoiding distractions. He motivated the students to work diligently to build a brighter future for themselves.
The bishop also highlighted the role of parents in nurturing a spirit of perseverance in their children, encouraging them to develop habits of prayer and hard work in all their endeavors for a fulfilling life.
Margaret Aluka, the headteacher, announced an encouraging increase in the number of candidates for this year’s final examinations.
This year, the school has 399 UCE candidates, up from 384 last year, which reflects an increase of 15 students. Additionally, the UACE candidates have risen significantly, from 133 in 2024 to 181 this year, marking an impressive growth of 48 candidates.
Aluka attributes this rise to the school’s improving academic performance, expressing optimism for even greater success in 2025, thanks to thorough preparation by both internal and external teachers.
Unlike in 2024, when two expectant students took their final exams, she is confident that all candidates will complete their exams this year without any issues.
The candidates expressed their gratitude for the bishop’s encouraging words and committed to achieving excellent results, acknowledging the dedication of their teachers in ensuring their preparedness.
In 2025, S.4 (UCE) and S.6 (UACE) examinations will start with candidate briefings on October 10, 2025, for S.4, and November 7, 2025, for S.6. The actual UCE examinations commence on October 10, 2025, while the UACE examinations begin on November 7, 2025.
