The Assistant Bishop of Kampala Diocese, Rt. Rev. Jackson Frederick Baalwa, has urged Christians to prioritize their safety during the upcoming electoral period. According to the Electoral Commission roadmap, nominations for Parliamentary elections will be held from 16th to 17th September 2025. Nominations for Local Government elections will take place between 3rd and 12th September 2025, while Presidential election nominations are scheduled for 2nd to 3rd October 2025.
In preparation for the general elections, political parties have already begun conducting primaries to select their flagbearers. The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) party has set 16th July 2025 as the date for electing Parliamentary flagbearers. As a result, aspirants across the political spectrum have intensified campaigns to secure party tickets ahead of the general elections.
Rt. Rev. Jackson Frederick Baalwa has called on Christians to take part in the elections, either as candidates or as voters. “Christians should stop lamenting about poor service delivery when some of them don’t even participate in elections,” Baalwa said.
“If you hear God’s calling to contest, kindly embrace it and participate in elections. Kindly prepare your voters’ slips or seek National IDs to participate in the upcoming elections,” he added. He, however, emphasized the importance of safety during elections and urged Christians to avoid violence-related activities as they support their preferred candidates.
Bishop Baalwa made the remarks during a Thanksgiving ceremony for Rt. Rev. Wilson Kisekka, the Bishop of Luwero Diocese, marked his first anniversary since he was consecrated and enthroned as the fourth bishop of Luwero. The event took place at St. Mark’s Cathedral in Luwero Town Council on Sunday.
During the same event, Rt. Rev. Michael Lubowa, the Bishop of Central Buganda Diocese, commended and prayed for President Yoweri Museveni, expressing hope that he wins the 2026 general election to fulfill the church’s demands. Last year, after praying for President Museveni during the National Heroes Day celebrations, Bishop Lubowa had requested a new car.
“My car is old; it will not finish 2026 yet. You know, we are entering 2026,” Lubowa said. Several religious leaders have appealed for vehicles and other donations from President Museveni over the years. Retired Major Jessica Alupo, who represented President Museveni at Bishop Kisekka’s thanksgiving ceremony, also urged religious leaders and Christians to pray for peace and for President Museveni to win the upcoming election.
Denes Sekabira, the Member of Parliament for Katikamu North, advised voters to support candidates committed to transforming their communities. Sekabira argued that Uganda’s development cannot be sustained through handouts such as Emyooga and the Parish Development Model, but through investment in infrastructure.
According to the Electoral Commission, the polling period for Presidential, Parliamentary, Local Government Councils (City/District, Municipality/City Division, and Sub-county/Town/Municipal Division), and SIGs Representatives is scheduled to take place from 12th January to 9th February 2026-URN.
