The Uganda Police Force, Anti Stock Theft Unit (ASTU), has recovered two heads of stolen cattle in separate operations conducted in Mt. Moroto and Teso ASTU Sectors. The first recovery was made on Tuesday, 7th July 2026 at Naturum Cattle Market in Loreng Sub-County, Nakapiripirit District.
An operation led by Denis Oteng, recovered one head of cattle – a brown cow with white spots. The cow belongs to Loru Kiyonga, 60, a peasant farmer and resident of Domoye Village, Lolachat Sub-County, Nabilatuk District.
It was allegedly in possession of Robert Wafula, a resident of Bukitanga Village in Bunambutye Sub-County, Bulambuli District. Wafula claimed he bought it from an unknown Karamojong warrior at Naturum Cattle Market.
Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident. He said the suspect who sold the cow is still at large.
The recovered cow is currently being kept at Nakapiripirit ASTU Zonal Headquarters for further management. In the second incident, the ASTU Teso team recovered another stolen cow on Saturday, 4th July 2026 at an animal checkpoint in Kalaki District. The cow belongs to Lucy Aganyo, 35, a resident of Kojago Village, Otuboi Sub-County, Kalaki County, Kalaki District.
Police arrested Alfred Ochen from the same village and Samuel Odongo, a cattle trader from Kumi District, to aid in investigations. Preliminary findings indicate that Ochen stole the cow valued at 1.7 million shillings and sold it to Odongo.
Odongo then sold it to Kakembo Morris, a trader from Kampala. Both suspects were arrested and handed over to Otuboi Police Station for further management. Longole commended community members and peace committee members for the information that led to the recoveries.
“We urge all livestock traders and market authorities to verify ownership and demand proof of purchase before transacting. Members of the public are encouraged to report cases of cattle theft and suspicious sales to the nearest police station or ASTU detachment,” Longole said.
“We further warn that dealing in stolen livestock is a criminal offense and perpetrators will be prosecuted in courts of law,” he warned-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
