Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) President Patrick Oboi Amuriat has accused police of disrupting the campaign activities of the party’s presidential candidate, Nathan Nandala Mafabi, in Kween and Bukwo districts. Amuriat made the remarks on Monday, October 13, during a campaign rally in Kween District, where he criticized the Uganda Police Force for allegedly attempting to prematurely end Nandala’s address to supporters.
According to Amuriat, police officers intervened during the event and pressured the candidate to summarize his speech, sparking a confrontation between civilians and law enforcement.
“What the police are forgetting is that they are harassing the next fountain of honour,” Amuriat told the crowd, suggesting that Nandala is a potential future leader of the country. “One day, the police will apologize with a salute.” The confrontation reportedly escalated into a physical scuffle between some members of the public and police officers, although no injuries were confirmed. Amuriat accused security forces of acting on the orders of the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to destabilize opposition campaigns.
He claimed that the FDC, being a strong opposition party with growing public support, has increasingly become a target of state interference. “They are targeting us because we are a winning party, and the choice of the Ugandan people,” Amuriat said.
He called on FDC supporters and Ugandans at large to remain resilient in the face of what he described as state intimidation and political persecution. Despite the disruption, Nandala continued with his address, reaffirming his commitment to represent the interests of Ugandans and calling for peaceful engagement throughout the campaign period.
