The Police in Kitgum Municipality have arrested 64 suspected criminals.
Peter Oyesigye, the Kitgum District Police Commander (DPC), noted that the operation, which targeted hotspots in the central business district, was prompted by public outcry over rampant break-ins, waylaying of residents, and phone snatching.
He said that the operation was carefully planned and executed to dismantle the ring of criminal gangs that had been terrorising residents. “The police swept through corridors and backstreets along Uhuru Drive near the main Kitgum Mosque in Central Cell, and also near Gates Bar night club in Apollo ground cell, all in Central Division. Oyesigye explained.
He says that out of the 64 suspects arrested, 43 are still under police custody at Kitgum Central Police Station. “The suspects were screened, and those found to have proper documentation were released”. Oyesigye said, “Investigations are ongoing, and the suspects’ files will be submitted to the Resident State Attorney for further perusal”.
Oyesigye emphasised that the operation aims to bring back sanity to Kitgum Municipality by dismantling the ring of criminal gangs by assuring the residents that the police are committed to ensuring their safety and security.
Oyesigye further added that some of the suspects are known drug addicts.
