The Uganda Professional Science Teachers’ Union (UPSTU) successfully hosted its inaugural Science Innovation Projects Competition 2025 for the Eastern Region at Mbale Secondary School on Saturday, July 5th, 2025. The event attracted students from across the region, all showcasing innovative scientific projects aimed at solving real-world problems.
Held under the theme “Science for Development and Transformation,” the competition is designed to promote hands-on learning and scientific creativity in secondary schools. It provides a national platform for learners to exhibit groundbreaking ideas across key disciplines, including Agriculture, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, ICT, and Mathematics, in line with the competence-based curriculum.
Benson Tuguma, the Vice National Chairperson of UPSTU, emphasized the core philosophy behind the initiative: “Through this initiative, we found that one way to ensure our students access quality education is by letting them explore and expose their potential through different discoveries so that they can learn how to solve societal problems.”
Tuguma encouraged learners to benchmark their work and adopt a mindset of continuous learning to become skilled innovators under the new student-centered curriculum. Betty Auma, the National Secretary of UPSTU, commended the dedication of teachers who mentored the students, enabling them to reach their potential. “I strongly believe this initiative will significantly contribute to improving the quality of innovations within society.
According to the organizers, the top five exhibitors from each region will advance to the national competition. From the Eastern Region, the schools selected to represent at the national level include Soroti Secondary School, Kakira Secondary School, Mbale Secondary School, and Kira College Butiki-URN.
