Ugandan long-distance runner Sarah Chelangat claimed victory in the 5000 meters race at the Kip Keino Classic held on Sunday, June 1, in Nairobi, Kenya. The national half-marathon record holder secured the win with a time of 15 minutes and 03 seconds, beating Kenya’s Jepkoech Maurine Chebor, who finished second in 15 minutes and 14 seconds. Gemene from Ethiopia took third place, clocking 15 minutes and 21 seconds.

According to Chelangat, the win marks an important milestone in her preparations for the World Championships, where she hopes to compete in the 10,000-meter race. “I am grateful that I have won, but I need to put more effort in the next race to qualify,” said Chelangat.

She added, “I am not giving up, for the qualification window is still on. I will do my best in the next race in Europe.” Charity Cherop, who also competed in the 5000m event, finished sixth with a time of 15 minutes and 31 seconds.

The 2025 World Championships are scheduled to take place from September 13 to 21. Leni Shida records a personal best in 400m. Meanwhile, in the women’s 400-meter race, Uganda’s Leni Shida secured second place with a personal best (PB) time of 50.93 seconds. The race was won by Kenya’s Adongo Mercy Oketch, who clocked 50.14 seconds.

Beatrice Ayikoru, the General Secretary of the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF), commended the athletes’ performances and expressed confidence in their future. “I’m optimistic that the athletes will showcase their potential at the World Championships,” said Ayikoru-URN.
