Six people have been arrested in connection with the death of 33-year-old Peter Kaluya, a resident of Bulubude village, in Malongo sub-county, Mayuge district.
The suspects Abdullah Mateeka, Karim Kiwanuka, Jamiru Opili, Yasin Tibiita, Halima Nabirye and Aisha Mutesi are currently detained at Mayuge central police station over murder charges.
It is reported that, following Tuesday’s National Resistance Movement-NRM structure elections at Bulubude village, where Isaac Lwakala emerged the winner, the supporters of his opponent, Khuzaima Wante, opted for violence to protest the outcome of the polls.
The angry supporters reportedly assaulted the presiding officer, grabbed declaration forms from him as others cheered on.
However, other onlookers, including Kaluya, aided the presiding officer in escaping from the angry crowd. Kaluya’s act further enraged the chaotic crowd, and they assaulted him.
Kaluya died on the way to Iganga General Hospital.
The Busoga East Police Spokesperson, Michael Kafayo, says that the suspects will face two accounts of murder and attempted murder, respectively.
Kafayo says that detectives have evidence linking the suspects to the crime, and they will be produced in court after investigations-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
