In a heartwarming gesture, bodaboda riders from Kampala City on Tuesday carried out a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor, with groceries worth 3 million Shillings.

The outreach, organized under the umbrella of the United Boda-Boda Riders’ Cooperative Union, also known as the National Boda-boda Union, brought together about 20 riders who took part in handing over the donated items, such as sugar and bread, to 100 patients in the surgery and Trauma wards.

The National Boda-boda Union Chairperson, Frank Mawejje, said the initiative was part of their commitment to give back to a hospital that has served countless people in northern Uganda, including boda-boda riders and their families.

Mawejje said the selected Lacor Hospital because of its history in the management of various illnesses, with the most notable being the first Ebola outbreak in the country.

Sister Jane Aceng, who is in charge of Surgery Ward 1, praised the bodaboda riders for their selfless act, noting that it was unusual but highly commendable for the informal sector.

“Thank you so much for your support. We pray that God continues to bless the work of your hands so that you come back to support more patients,” Sr Aceng said.

Aceng said the ward receives a high number of trauma victims, especially during the festive season, with 80% because of bodaboda crashes.

Susan Ajok, a caretaker of one of the patients who received a gift hamper, urged other community groups to emulate the riders’ example, saying a visit to the sick by people they don’t even know shows a rare sympathy.

“CSR is not only for big companies. Today, our bodaboda riders from Kampala have shown concern and compassion. Anyone else can do it,” Ajok said.

The riders later painted a Zebra Crossing in front of Buganda Pub, one of the busiest sections of Gulu City, and will conduct a road safety training for bodabodas in Gulu City on Wednesday-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
