Jimmy James Michael Akena, the Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) party president has criticized the government for prioritizing the interests of the neighboring countries neglecting its own. This follows Parliament’s approval of the deployment of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) to South Sudan, even though the national army had already been deployed weeks earlier without parliamentary authorization.

The UPDF is also engaged in military operations in the Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Somalia. To Akena, this is a clear indication that the current government is more interested in fighting other people’s wars than helping its own.

“They are ready to go to war but not to save lives. For me that is not right, it is not okay. The first job of the government is to protect the people of Uganda,” he said. He made the remarks on Saturday while addressing party supporters in various locations within Dokolo District.

Akena who is eyeing the presidential seat is optimistic that he will defeat President Yoweri Museveni in the 2026 poll. Adding that his aspirations and dreams cannot be silenced by bullets.

He continued saying “But I am also here to request your support because in 2026 I am determined, I am going to go challenge and defeat Museveni in this election.” The Lira City East legislator appealed to Ugandans to take up the challenge by supporting one another to protect the lives of all citizens of Uganda.

He noted that with love and care for one another, the future of Ugandan youngsters will be secure and everybody will be able to enjoy a Uganda which respects its citizens and respects the lives of the citizens-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
