Godfrey Kayemba Afaayo, the former Masaka Municipal Council Mayor is on the spot for alleged involvement in fraudulent land transactions during his tenure of office.
Kayemba who served for two terms as Masaka Mayor between 2011 to 2021, is facing charges of abuse of office and obtaining money by false pretense.
He has been instructed to report to Masaka Central Police Station to record a statement on accusations of using his office to illegally covert public land and selling it to private individuals.
Hanifa Naddamba, a resident of Kijjabwemi cell in Kimanya-Kabonera Division, Masaka City accuses Kayemba of obtaining from her a sum of 60 million shillings in the purchase transaction of a piece in Bwala cell.
She alleges that Kayemba negotiated the sale of the property for which he also received the payment in 2019, but instead handed her fake transfer forms.
Naddamba bemoans that she has repeatedly appealed to Kayemba to either refund the money or grant her vacant possession of the land all in vain.
She says that to her disappointment, Kayemba presented a forged extract of the council minutes that granted permission to sell off the said.
Joseph Bakaleke, the Masaka City Police Commander confirms that they have summoned following instructions by the State Minister of Ethics and Integrity who received a complaint about the matter.
He indicates that the complaint has already recorded a statement and submitted the documentary evidence, which will aid in the investigations into the matter.
Hood Hussein, the Masaka City Resident Commissioner indicates that he also has instructions to closely follow-up the investigations up to its logical conclusion, saying that it was one of the prominent complaints that were presented before the intergovernmental agencies that fight corruption.
He says the case is going act as a precursor to broader investigations into several other questionable sale of public assets in the area.
He says that his office has received reports about irregular sale and grabbing of public properties in the area by the local leaders, adding they have asked Police to cast their investigation wider to cause the prosecution of all the culprits.
Godfrey Kayemba Afaayo, has declined to comment about the allegations, but he has been instructed to report to Masaka Central Police Station on Wednesday without fail.
His summons comes at a time when his former Deputy Sarah Nankyazi, currently the Masaka Assistant Resident District Commissioner-ARDC is also facing charges of corruption and abuse of office, for irregularly transferring the Masaka Municipal Council Women’s Resource Center building into her private business.
