A 31-year-old man identified as Akim Murangira, a resident of Ruhiita Cell, Burombe Parish, Ruhinda Sub-county in Rukungiri District, is accused of defiling an 11-year-old primary school pupil from the same parish. The case was heard today at the Rukungiri Grade One Magistrate’s Court. Grade One Magistrate His Worship Gonzaga Mbarabgu said the court has no jurisdiction to take a plea because the offence can only be tried by the High Court. He adjourned the case and referred it to the Chief Magistrate’s Court for mention on 23rd June 2026.

Murangira is accused of defiling the juvenile on the night of 17th May 2024. At the time, the girl was 11 years old and a Primary Five pupil at Burombe Primary School in Ruhinda Sub-county.

According to the victim’s grandmother, Aida Baraaza, who lives with and cares for the girl, Akim Murangira entered the house at night without her knowledge and defiled her grand daughter. The girl immediately ran to her grandmother’s bedroom crying and said Akim Murangira found her sleeping, defiled her, and threatened her into silence.

In the morning, the grandmother reported the matter to the LC1 Chairperson who advised her to take the child to a clinic and later report the case to police. Since then, Akim Murangira had been missing until he returned home in May and was arrested. The victim, whose identity has been withheld because she is a juvenile, said she was able to identify Akim Murangira because their solar light is always on at night, and he is also a resident of the same area-URN.
