At least four students of St. Peter’s Naalya Secondary School have been injured in an accident that occurred in Nakasongola along the Kampala -Gulu highway.
The accident occurred at around 9:30 am at Kakindu village in Wabinyonyi sub-county in Nakasongola, along Kampala -Gulu .
The injured have been identified as Christabella Awori, Claudia Namukisa, Margaret Atwine, and Prudence Tumugabirwe.
The Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, Sam Twiineamazima, explains that the students were injured when the Coaster UBQ 073H, which they were travelling in, collided with fuel tanker UBQ 935Y and UBK 257F Toyota Hiace white (Ambulance).
Twiineamazima said the drivers of the school Coaster from the Gulu side, followed by an ambulance, while overtaking a trailer, drifted to the opposite lane, thereby colliding head-on with a fuel tanker.
Policemen from Nakasongola rushed to the scene and transferred the injured students to health facilities in Kampala for treatment.
The fuel tanker UBQ 935Y remains at the scene pending offloading of fuel before towing, while UBK 257F and UBQ 073H have been towed to Katuugo Police Station.
Twiineamazima said that preliminary investigations point to care overtaking as the cause of the accident, but inquires are ongoing.”Motorists are urged to exercise caution, especially before overtaking maneuvers on busy highways, and to adhere to speed limits and road signs,” Twiineamazima said
