A disagreement over today’s Local Council I (LCI) elections turned deadly in Kasese District on Monday after a 30-year-old man was allegedly beaten to death during an argument over who would win the village chairperson race.
The deceased, Nelson Masereka, a resident of Kisanga Village, is said to have been assaulted following a heated exchange with a fellow resident identified only as Sowedi over Tuesday’s village elections. According to local authorities, the argument escalated when Sowedi allegedly picked up a stone and struck Masereka on the forehead, causing him to collapse unconscious.
The suspect is also accused of continuing to assault him before fleeing the scene. A friend rushed Masereka to a nearby drug shop for first aid before relatives were alerted. He was later transferred to Rukoki Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Rwenzori East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Elly Maate confirmed the incident, saying the suspect was later tracked down and arrested while hiding in neighbouring Bunyangabu District. He is currently being held at Hima Police Station and is expected to be transferred for prosecution.
