Police in Kween District have arrested a 20-year-old Chelimo Filan for the alleged murder of an eight-year-old girl. The deceased has been identified as Tracy Yeko, a top-class pupil and resident of Kapsomo Cell, Kapsomo Ward, Kaprorono Town Council in Kween District.
Fredmark Chesang, the Sipi Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said the suspect was arrested following investigations into the child’s disappearance and death. “We have filed the case CPS CRB 275/2026 and recorded statements from relevant witnesses, and the suspect has been detained at Kween Central Police Station to help with the investigation,” Chesang said.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the child went missing on Wednesday 9, in the evening, after her mother sent her to the suspect’s home to collect an axe for splitting firewood.
He explained that the child did not return home, prompting her parents to search for her without success. He said the father of the deceased, Akuson Cherop, reported the disappearance at Kaproron Town Council Police Station on Thursday morning.
According to Chesang, Kokop Florence, a resident of the area, reportedly discovered the child’s body wrapped in a sack and dumped near her coffee plantation.
“Kokop alerted area residents, who informed police, leading to the securing of the scene and the deployment of a sniffer dog to assist in the investigation,” he said.
Chesang further revealed that police suspect that the child was sexually assaulted before she was strangled and her neck broken.
“The child’s shoes were also recovered at the doorway of the suspect’s house,” he said. The deceased’s body was taken to Kapchorwa General Referral Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
Jackline Cherotwo, a resident of Bugema cell in Kaproron town council, condemned the act and has asked for the authorities to expedite the process for the deceased and the family to get justice. “This is so unfortunate that a grown-up human being does such a thing to an innocent child,” she said-URN.
