An 11-month-old baby has died in a house fire in Mukono District in incident police are investigating as murder by arson. The incident occurred at about 7:40 pm on Monday, September 7, in Lufunve Village, Kyetume Parish, Nakisunga Sub-county.
Police said the child’s mother, Merika Namugambe, 24, allegedly locked herself inside the house with the baby before setting it on fire. Namugambe reportedly escaped from the burning house after sustaining injuries, but the baby died in the fire.
The child’s body was recovered and taken to Mulago Hospital for a postmortem examination. Police homicide officers visited the scene and documented evidence before tracing and arresting Namugambe to assist with investigations.
Preliminary inquiries indicate that the incident followed domestic disagreements between Namugambe and her partner, from whom she had reportedly separated. Luke Owoyesigyire, the Deputy Public Relations Officer for Kampala Metropolitan Police, said the circumstances surrounding the fire and the child’s death are still being investigated. Police said Namugambe will be produced in court after completion of the investigations-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
