Residents of Acomia trading centre, Kateta Sub County in Serere district have banished a woman who threw her newborn baby in a pit latrine.

Gloria Icoris, who has been a teacher at Acomia Community Nursery School located in Acomia Trading Centre has been living in the area for a month.

However, residents on Monday banished her after discovering a baby crying inside the pit latrine. The infant, believed to be a day old, was found by the neighbours who heard cries from the pit latrine.

“I brought my Son out for a long call when I heard a faint cry,” said Hellen Amulen, the neighbour who discovered the baby. “At first, I thought it was just my imagination, but then I heard it again. That’s when I looked inside the toilet and saw the baby,” she added.

She called for help and attracted several people who rescued the baby.

The residents then started tracing for Icoris, but she was saved by a good samaritan who took her to the police station for safety.

Amos Ocola, the LCIII Chairman of Kateta says that the baby was rushed to the hospital for treatment. “This necessitated us to hand over the baby to the mother for breastfeeding after analyzing the situation,” Ocola said.

Ocola notes that the mother was upset after she was reportedly abandoned by her husband. The man, whose details have not yet been established is a resident of Katakwi district.

“This is the first incident in this area and it has upset many of my residents who demanded her immediate expulsion from the village,” he added.
