Wazalendo Savings and Credit Cooperative Society (SACCO) is encouraging UPDF personnel to start investing in sustainable businesses early to prepare for life after military service. The SACCO’s Vice Chairman, Brig Gen Peter Gaetano Omola, made the call during a two-day training for branch managers and delegates from the Central Region held at Land Force Headquarters in Bombo.
The training, conducted under the theme, “Preparing for Retirement Through Smart Enterprise Selection and Management,” focused on helping participants identify, establish and manage viable income-generating enterprises. Brig Gen Omola encouraged the participants to consider ventures such as coffee farming, poultry and piggery, stressing the importance of preparing for retirement early.
He urged the participants to put the knowledge acquired into practice rather than treating the training as an observation exercise. Omola also asked the participants to share the knowledge with other UPDF personnel in their respective units to extend the benefits of the programme.
The training included practical sessions conducted by experienced farmers and agricultural experts from Luwero and other parts of the country. Coffee expert Mumbere Hosea took participants through coffee varieties, plantation establishment and management. Participants also visited successful agricultural enterprises in Bombo and Luwero, where they gained practical experience in coffee farming, poultry and piggery.
The farmers advised SACCO members to start small, remain committed, and gradually expand their enterprises as they gain experience and increase their income. The training brought together Wazalendo SACCO branch managers, senior and junior officers, delegates, farmers, and agricultural experts-URN.
