The Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) have deployed heavily along the Katakwi-Napak district border to contain a two-day land dispute between the Iteso and Karimojong communities.
The conflict, involving residents of Acuna Village in Ongongoja Sub County (Katakwi) and those from Napak District, escalated on Monday when suspected Karimojong cattle rustlers allegedly stole 13 goats from the Iteso community.
Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, the UPDF 3rd Division Commander, confirmed the military’s intervention, stating that permanent deployment has been put in place to maintain stability while local leaders work toward a resolution.
“The soldiers are patrolling the contested area to prevent further clashes. Fortunately, no lives have been lost, thanks to the UPDF’s swift intervention,” Brig. Gen. Sserunkuma said.
However, he accused some local leaders from Napak of fueling the conflict for personal gain. Unfortunately, some leaders are inciting violence to serve their interests,” he noted, adding that the UPDF will collaborate with the police to investigate and hold those responsible accountable.
Despite the tensions, Brig. Gen. Sserunkuma revealed that efforts to recover stolen livestock have been largely successful, with an 80% recovery rate.
Vincent Savior Okwi, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Katakwi, said that both communities had been on the verge of violence, but UPDF intervention had calmed the situation.
According to Okwi, the dispute escalated when members of the Karimojong community crossed into Teso territory to plough land, sparking tensions.
“We are allowing the situation to normalize before engaging both communities and their leaders to harmonize the dispute,” Okwi said.
Vice President Maj. (Rtd) Jessica Rose Alupo urged security forces to remain vigilant in maintaining stability, emphasizing the government’s commitment to restoring peace in the region. She also warned against the rampant sale of land, which she identified as a key factor fueling disputes in many communities.
The UPDF and security agencies have reassured the public that investigations are ongoing to identify those responsible for instigating the clashes, with the ultimate goal of ensuring lasting peace between the two communities-URN.
