United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has welcomed Iran’s announcement that the Strait of Hormuz is open to commercial shipping, describing the move as “a step in the right direction.”
In remarks shared following the announcement, Guterres said he “welcomes Iran’s announcement that the Strait of Hormuz is completely open for all commercial vessels for the remainder of the ceasefire.”
He added: “This is a step in the right direction.”
The UN chief reiterated that the organisation’s position remains unchanged, stressing the need for full respect of international maritime rights.
“The UN position remains clear: we need the full restoration of international navigational rights and freedoms in the Strait of Hormuz, respected by everyone,” he said.
Guterres also expressed hope that the development will support broader peace efforts in the region.
“I also hope that, together with the ceasefire, this measure will contribute to creating confidence between the parties and strengthen the ongoing dialogue facilitated by Pakistan,” he added.
