Kyagulanyi now regrets the excitement he had when lawyer Jude Mbabali abandoned DP and came to join him in NUP a few months ago. There was fanfare at Kavule with many convinced the party had finally got someone to overcome Kimanya-Kabonera MP Abed Bwanika.
But from the investigations Kavule teams have been conducting in Kimanya-Kabonera, Kyagulanyi has since become disappointed and doubts Mbabali has what it takes to defeat Bwanika. He fears that having a NUP candidate losing to Bwanika or defeating him narrowly will be a very embarrassing scenario to the NUP brand.
This is why he isn’t prepared to take chances on Abed Bwanika who so far has been his most outspoken, fearless and eloquent critic. Bwanika has called Kyagulanyi all sorts of names including branding him a Sadomasochist who profits from homosexuality. Bwanika has appeared on CBS and at public functions to attack Kyagulanyi and NUP which has created an impression that he is more comfortable with NRM than Kavule.
So, all this has made him one opponent who Kyagulanyi doesn’t want to take lightly. If it defeating, he wants him to be decisively defeated and fears the prospect of Bwanika defeating a NUP candidate or losing his seat narrowly. That will provide fodder to propagandists like Frank Gashumba to go telling the world that the NUP principal doesn’t have much influence in Buddu.
“The principal wants to be sure that whoever gets the NUP ticket registers a sure win again Bwanika because a win for the incumbent in Kimanya-Kabonera will be too painful to endure,” says a NUP insider close to Kyagulanyi. “We are better off fronting no candidate at all than putting a weakling who Abed Bwanika will devour.”
Indeed, because of this reason, Kyagulanyi has remained reluctant to overtly endorse Mbabali or any of the NUP guys who have so far stepped forward. He has demanded they each go to the people and popularize themselves so that the best emerges and demonstrates capacity to defeat Abed Bwanika. “So far we haven’t identified anyone strong enough to decisively defeat and humiliate Abed Bwanika to the levels the principal desires to see,” says a Kavule insider.
