The Busia district councilors have approved a 57.3 billion shillings budget for the financial year 2026/2027.
The Education department had the largest allocation, amounting to 29 billion shillings, while the health department was allocated 10 billion shillings.
The Council approved 9.9 billion shillings for administration. The water and sanitation had 6.9 billion shillings approved for its operations.
The Roads and Engineering Department will receive 1.6 billion shillings. Over 850 million shillings was allocated to the statutory bodies, while the Natural Resources sector received over 313 million shillings.
The Busia district council speaker, Charles Malowa Kudedi, said that during the new financial year, they have approved a work plan that includes annual procurement and disposal of lands, recruitment, revenue enhancement, and local revenue charging policy.
Stephen Mayende Awangale, the councilor representing Bulumbi sub-county, expressed gratitude that the education department was allocated the biggest percentage of the budget.
He hopes that it will address the challenges in the education sector, like understaffing, among others.
He said that his sub-county will benefit from several projects.
Innocent Muliro, the Workers’ Councilor, said that the decision to give education enough funds is due to salary enhancement and the need to ensure there’s improvement in the education sector.
Charles Olow, the secretary of the finance committee, said the education sector was prioritised to ensure quality education services.
Scovia Nandera, a resident, said that they want the issues of delay in paying teachers to stop in the area because whenever teachers strike, it affects their children.
James Barasa, another resident, said that the district council would have given priority to the works department so that they could work on roads.
