The Other Aceng in Lira City Woman MP Race

By KT Reporter

Patricia Aceng Ogwang, a 30-year-old journalist, is among the contenders for the Lira City Woman MP race.

She has been viewed as a silent and unexpected face for the contest. Ogwang believes her voice can transform into a force for the people.

A broadcast journalist with nearly a decade of media experience, Aceng, who earlier declared her intention to contest as under the NRM party ticket, withdrew from the NRM primaries to instead opt for the race as an independent candidate.

Aceng’s entry into politics has stirred conversations not because she comes from a wealthy background or holds a high office, but because she is daring to challenge two political heavyweights: NRM’s Jane Aceng, and UPS’s Betty Amongi, Minister of Gender, Labour and Social Development. Both women are seasoned politicians, well-connected, and deeply entrenched in the political fabric of the region.

A familiar voice to radio listeners across Northern Uganda, Aceng Patricia began her journalism journey in 2016. She has worked with several media houses, including Record TV, Rainbow FM Nebbi, Radio Lira, and, until recently, Voice of Lango FM.

Her background in broadcasting has shaped her into a confident communicator and a voice for the community. She said her decision to join the race aims at restoring peace, unity, and championing the economic revival of Lira as a commercial and industrial hub.

She believes her career has also given her firsthand exposure to the struggles of ordinary citizens: businesswomen in markets, hawkers, single mothers, and youth battling unemployment. These experiences form the backbone of her political vision.

Aceng’s campaign message centers on economic empowerment, infrastructure development, and social inclusion, aiming to tackle poverty, promote entrepreneurship, and ensure no group—women, men, or youth—is left behind.

She believes the people of Lira City, despite living in an urban environment, remain highly vulnerable due to low incomes and high taxes.

Beyond economic issues, she envisions a cleaner, safer, and better-planned Lira City, emphasizing the need for better road infrastructure, waste management, and public health systems.

Her greatest challenge, however, is the political terrain itself. Going up against two established cabinet ministers is no small feat. Both Dr. Aceng and Amongi command extensive networks, resources, and visibility across the country; thus, their presence in Lira politics has historically made it difficult for newcomers to gain ground.

Moreover, Ugandan politics has long been influenced by financial might—a reality Aceng openly acknowledges.

“Sometimes it doesn’t need money; it needs a voice. We have seen people who have money, but they have worked within their own interests. But if you give me the authority and power to go right there, these issues are going to be aired out strongly.” She said.

Her youth, though a strength in energy and vision, may also be a barrier in a region where political leadership often skews toward seniority and experience. Yet, Aceng sees this as an opportunity to redefine leadership for a younger generation.

While her opponents’ strength lies in their established records, Aceng’s advantage is authenticity and relatability. She is a daughter of the soil—born, raised, and shaped by the everyday struggles of Lira City residents. Her journalistic career gives her direct access to the people’s pulse, a rare trait among politicians.

As the 2026 elections draw closer, Aceng Patricia faces a journey that will test her resilience, resources, and resolve. Yet, her message remains clear: she is not stepping back.

Whether she wins or not, Aceng’s story is already inspiring, a reminder that politics is not just for the powerful but for anyone bold enough to believe that their voice matters.
