The Electoral Commission in Arua City nominated 18 candidates for various positions in the Local Council Five elections on the first day of the exercise, amid challenges of slow internet connectivity.
The exercise, which kicked off on Wednesday at the newly commissioned regional election offices in Arua City, was also marred by challenges, including missing proposers and seconders for most candidates who turned up alone.
Some candidates turned up at the offices to acquaint themselves with the new environment and the new procedures.
According to Osman Ezale, the Returning Officer for Arua City, the network and pre-registration challenges prevented them from registering a target of 30 candidates. He, however, expresses worry that more candidates, including those for Mayoral positions who didn’t show up on day one, could cause a long queue in the remaining two days.
Fred Tabu, the incumbent deputy speaker of Arua City Council, who is also seeking re-election as representative of the Central division to Arua City, says that he spent over four hours when he finally got nominated due to the challenge of slow network.
Meanwhile, some of the nominated candidates expressed happiness for making it through on the first day.
