Joint security forces in Moroto District have recovered two guns in separate operations, just two days after unknown armed Karamojong warriors ambushed three people along the Moroto–Soroti highway. The victims of the Saturday night ambush were identified as Zainab Angella, an FDC aspirant for the Moroto Municipality parliamentary seat, Jehoshaphat Opong, a journalist with UBC Totore FM, and Lucas Logiro.

The trio came under attack at around 8:00 p.m. near Kautakou village in Napak District, which borders Moroto. Security teams responded swiftly, cordoning off the scene until morning to preserve evidence and launch investigations. However, the canine unit was unable to effectively track the suspects, partly due to challenges in identifying the exact location of the shooters.

On Monday, joint forces comprising the Anti-Stock Theft Unit (ASTU) and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) carried out a separate operation in Katikekile Sub-county, where two guns were recovered. In the first case, Lokiru Emotoka, 26, a resident of Kailekol village, voluntarily surrendered an SMG rifle with two rounds of ammunition to the joint intelligence team at Loputuk X-ray headquarters.

In the second, security personnel forcefully recovered a firearm from Lokuko Ekamuriat, a resident of Naroo village in the same sub-county. Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson Mike Longole confirmed the recoveries, saying they signal progress in the ongoing investigations and efforts to restore peace in the area.

He added that statements have already been recorded from the ambush victims and that security has been heightened along all major supply routes in the region to ensure public safety, especially during this political season.

“The Joint Security Forces appreciate the cooperation of the community and urge anyone with illicit firearms to surrender them voluntarily. We remain committed to maintaining peace and security in the Karamoja sub-region,” Longole said.
