Team Uganda delivered a stellar performance at the 4th edition of the CAA African U18 and U20 Athletics Championships, held from July 16th to 20th, 2025, in Abeokuta, Nigeria, clinching a total of nine medals. Uganda secured four gold, one silver, and four bronze medals in a show of rising dominance in youth athletics—a performance that officials from the Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF) have described as a testament to the country’s growing strength in the sport.

In the U20 men’s category, Samuel Simba Cherop claimed gold, while Bentalin Chemutai stamped authority in the 3000m race. The U20 women’s 5000m event saw Uganda sweep top honors, with Charity Cherop and Nancy Chekwurui both striking gold in their respective heats. Risper Cherop earned Uganda’s only silver medal in the U20 5000m race, reinforcing the nation’s long-standing reputation in long-distance events.

The bronze medalists included David Berkham Otim, Jacob Sande, Brenda Chekwem, and a second podium finish for Samuel Simba Cherop—capping off an impressive double-medal performance. Uganda Athletics Federation President Dominic Otuchet praised the young athletes for their resilience and dedication, crediting the strong performance to intensive preparations and teamwork.

“This championship has showcased the immense potential of our young athletes,” said Otuchet. “We have come to stay in performance, and the light is green. Uganda will continue to exhibit excellent results on the international stage.” He emphasized that the results highlight the depth of talent being cultivated at the grassroots level—a pipeline that the federation is committed to strengthening through ongoing development initiatives. The team’s successful showing in Nigeria is expected to inspire further confidence and motivation ahead of upcoming continental and global competitions, as Uganda cements its position as a rising force in African athletics-URN.
