Suspected thieves broke into Bukinda Cooperative Village Financial Services (SACCO) in Muhanga Town Council, Rukiga District, early Tuesday and stole an unspecified amount of money and two laptops. The break-in occurred at about 2 am on September 29, 2026, at the SACCO premises in Kagunga Village, Rutare Ward.
A SACCO staff member, who spoke to our reporter on condition of anonymity, said the suspects gained access to the premises, damaged the safe, and took cash whose amount of which had not yet been established.
They also reportedly stole two computer laptops. SP Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi Regional Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said Police had opened investigations.
Tumushime appealed to members of the public with information that could help identify the suspects to report to the nearest police station. The break-in is the latest in a series of incidents targeting financial institutions in the Kigezi region.
In May 2018, suspected thieves broke into Mubuga SACCO in Nyakinama Sub-county, Kisoro District, and reportedly tied up and assaulted the security guard, Clever Habumugisha. The suspects attempted to break open the SACCO safe but reportedly failed.
