Security reports show that Asuman Muganzi Mikirani, the suspected mastermind behind the recent Rwenzori attacks, is dead. However, details surrounding his death — including where, when, and how it happened — are uncertain.
According to a preliminary incident report from the Rwenzori West region, Muganzi is accused of having mobilized a group of attackers from different parts of Bundibugyo and Kagadi districts, under the guise of renovating his shrine in Kakukha II village, Sindila Sub-county, since October 26, 2025.
On November 1, 2025, the group — armed with guns, pangas, and catapults — attacked two military detachments at Malindi and Kakukha between 3:00 am and 5:00 am. During the Malindi attack, one UPDF soldier, Private Kwesiga Samuel (RA 306897), and his civilian wife, Nayebare Annitah, were reportedly killed, while another soldier, Private Twongyirwe Erias (RA 307056), was injured.
The attackers set the detachment ablaze before moving to Kakukha, where two of them were “put out of action.” The security report also notes that 26 grass-thatched houses were burnt, and several weapons were destroyed or stolen. At least 15 suspects — including one female and three minors — have been arrested and are being held at Bundibugyo Central Police Station and Muhoti Mountain Division Headquarters.
One of the dead attackers was identified as Biteyo Herizon, a Congolese national long known in the area as a goat and dog trader. Security officials said the injured soldier is currently receiving treatment at Muhoti Mountain Division Hospital in Fort Portal, where the bodies of four victims have also been conveyed.
