A 40-year-old man has been shot dead in Kyankwanzi District after allegedly resisting arrest and attacking police officers who had gone to his home to apprehend him over allegations of threatening violence and assault. The deceased has been identified as Aduman Barushimana, a resident of Gayaza East LC1 in Gayaza Subcounty, Kyankwanzi District.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Regional Police spokesperson, two officers attached to Gayaza Police Station went to Barushimana’s home to arrest him when he allegedly resisted and became violent.
Kigozi said Barushimana allegedly aimed a spear at the officers as they approached his home, but they managed to evade it. Kigozi said Barushimana pelted the officers with stones and other objects, injuring Sergeant Stephen Okongo. He said Barushimana then retreated into his house, where he allegedly picked up two pangas and a hammer before charging at the officers.
“He charged towards the policemen, injuring Sergeant Okongo, who sustained serious injuries in the scuffle, before firing warning shots to scare off the suspect. However, he remained advancing towards them,” Kigozi said.
Kigozi said the officers eventually shot Barushimana in the right leg after he continued advancing towards them. He fell and was rushed to Gayaza Health Centre III for treatment but died several hours later.
A report of death by shooting was subsequently made at Gayaza Subcounty Police Station, prompting an investigation into the incident. Police said Barushimana’s body was examined, while an SMG rifle, believed to have been used in the shooting, was recovered along with 10 rounds of ammunition and recorded as exhibits. The body was later handed over to the deceased’s relatives for burial.
Kigozi urged people who are wanted by police to cooperate with officers during arrest and avoid violent resistance. “We appeal to people who find themselves in conflict with the law and are wanted by police always to be cooperative. They should avoid the temptation of resisting arrest violently because police are at liberty to use reasonable force to overcome any amount of resistance put up by the suspect,” Kigozi said-URN.
