Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has told the voters of Kira municipality that he should be returned to parliament because he has represented them very well. Speaking to voters at Nakwero, Kiwologoma and Kijabijo all in Kira municipality, Ssemujju said for the three terms he has been in parliament representing the area, he has distinguished himself as the best MP at articulating not only his area’s concerns but also those of other Ugandans.
Ssemujju said irrespective of who is President, the country needs a parliament that can check the executive. He scoffed at those who say that people should only vote for their party candidates. The National Unity Platform-NUP Presidential candidate, Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has been telling his supporters to only vote for candidates supported by his party.
Ssemujju said the roles of a Member of Parliament are stated by law and any candidate who promises to do things outside the four roles will be lying. A Member of Parliament is vested with the role of appropriating of national resources, representing his/her constituents, oversight of government projects and making laws.
Ssemujju also took voters through the process they will follow during the voting on January 15 2025. He said that a person doesn’t need to have a voter ID for him/her to vote for as long as they are in the voter’s register. He said the biometric voter system that is going to be used during the voting is aimed at eliminating irregularities in the process.
For his part, Sheikh Dauda Wasajja the Kira Municipality county Sheikh asked voters to return Ssemujju as the MP. He said that in his role as the county sheikh, he has moved in other places but every time he mentions that he comes from Kira, the first thing people say is Ssemujju’s name. He therefore added it would be lack of insight to replace him with somebody else.
Ssemujju who is seeking a fourth term as Kira Municipality MP is contesting with eight other candidates. However stiff competition is between him and National Unity Platform candidate George Musisi.
Meanwhile, Joan Nabatanzi the People’s Front for Freedom candidate for Wakiso district woman MP has said she is the most qualified person to be elected for the position. Nabatanzi said her areas of focus will be rallying with others to ensure that Wakiso gets a fair share of its taxes. She said Wakiso that is the second highest district in paying taxes, the service it gets are not commensurate to the taxes they contribute to the national purse.
Nabatanzi is seeking to replace National Unity Platform’s Betty Ethel Naluyima who has represented the district since 2021. Before her, the NRM’s Rosemary Sseninde had represented Wakiso district since 2001 when it was curved out of Mpigi district. For her part, Flavia Nakafeero who is seeking the Wakiso district chairperson position told voters that local governments are at the centre of public service delivery.
She said voters must pay attention on who represents them because they are the one vested with the powers to determine what service people would receive. She said although she belongs to the Democratic Front, she is allied with the PFF that is not fielding any candidate for the position.
The Wakiso district chairperson position has no incumbent competing for it. Matia Lwanga Bwanika who has held it for 15 years has since shifted to Busiro South where he is seeking the MP seat on an independent ticket having been denied the NUP ticket.
In a related development, Julius Mutebi who is seeking to retain the mayorship of Kira municipality has asked voters not to look at a political party that one belongs to but the capacity to serve.
Speaking at Kimwanyi parish while canvassing for votes, Mutebi who after he was denied the NUP ticket joined PFF, said for the last three consecutive years, he has been voted as the best mayor in Uganda. He therefore, said, voters should look at this record and vote him again.
The Presidential and parliamentary elections will be held on January 15 2026. These will be followed by local council five election on January 22 and then the municipal elections on January 27. The last elections of local council three and division mayors will be held on February 4, 2026.
