Six new cases of Ebola disease have been confirmed in the March 23 Movement/Alliance Fleuve Congo (M23/AFC) rebels’-controlled areas of Alimbongo and Kayna in Lubero Territory, North Kivu Province, eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Freddy Kaniki, the deputy coordinator of the March 23 Movement/Alliance Fleuve Congo (M23/AFC), announced the cases in a statement issued on Friday evening.
According to Kaniki, four of the cases were confirmed in Alimbongo, while two were recorded in Kayna. He said epidemiological investigations have established that the cases are part of the same chain of transmission, which originated from an imported infection from Butembo.
Kaniki said four of the six confirmed cases were detected through post-mortem samples collected from people who died in the community. The other two cases involve symptomatic patients who were identified through the surveillance system and are receiving treatment at a health facility.
He said the Ebola response has been immediately activated and strengthened in Alimbongo and Kayna, with health teams mobilised to intensify surveillance and identify people who may have come into contact with confirmed cases for appropriate management.
Kaniki urged residents of Alimbongo and Kayna to remain vigilant and cooperate with response teams to help break the chain of transmission. He also called on the public to follow preventive measures, promptly report suspected cases and facilitate the work of health teams and local authorities.
The latest cases come as the Ebola outbreak continues to spread across the Democratic Republic of Congo, with over 4,000 people kiled, according to figures released on Thursday this week by the Country’s Health Ministry. According to the ministry, 4,018 people have died out of 8,300 cases recorded since the outbreak was declared in eastern Congo on May 15,2026.
According to Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, to date, the Ebola disease outbreak in DRC has been confirmed in Bas-Uele, Haut-Uele, Ituri, Nord-Kivu (North Kivu), Sud-Kivu (South Kivu), Sud-Ubangi (South Ubangi), and Tshopo provinces.
