Alex Niyonsaba Seruganda alias Supa Seru has retained the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party flag for Member of Parliament Bufumbira South in Kisoro district. This was after seven villages, which include Kanyenka, Migeshi, Murambi, Nyabitare, Kabaya, Karambi, and Bushoka, did not vote during last week’s party primaries due to disagreements between voters, candidates over irregularities.
On Tuesday, the villages voted amidst heightened security. Tadeo Majambere, Kisoro district NRM party registrar, declared Seruganda winner after garnering a total of 23,989 votes, defeating his closest contender, Sam Kwizera Bitangaro, who polled 23,392 votes. Other candidates: Derrick Kwiringira polled 69 votes, Barnabas Mujanama got 338 votes, and Phopnah Kyampeire got 65 votes.
After being declared winner, Seruganda held a procession with his supporters from Kisoro district council hall, where the tally centre was, to Kisoro mayors’ gardens, where he held a rally and assured them of effective services to the grassroots.
Bitangaro also congratulated Seruganda and asked for calm among his supporters. He says his team will sit and discuss the next course of action.
Elly Maate, police spokesperson for Kigezi region, says the election in the seven villages that had not voted on Tuesday was very peaceful due to the presence of enough joint security officers at every polling station.
