Farmers in Serere District have been encouraged to embrace organic farming methods to sustain the fertility of the soil.
While meeting with farmers in Serere Primary School, Cajila Africa Links Institute Limited emphasised the shift towards safer and more sustainable agricultural practices that will maximise the yields.
Julius Ecodu, the Sustainability Officer at Cajila Africa Links Institute Limited, said that they have supported farmers in research to enhance knowledge, support planning, and enable informed decision-making across various areas.
Ecodu highlighted concerns about environmental degradation, health risks to humans, and the potential harm to livelihoods caused by the use of harmful chemicals for agriculture.
Ecodu advised the farmers to use organic pesticides and fertilizers because they offer healthier and more eco-friendly option that aligns well with sustainable agricultural practices.
He recommends the adoption of organic and natural alternatives, especially integrated pest management techniques, to ensure long-term sustainability in farming.
Simon Peter Ongiro, the District coordinator of Cali Teso Farmers Co-Operative Union, expressed gratitude to Cajila Africa Links Institute Limited for empowering the local farming community.
Ongiro appreciated the knowledge being shared, stating that it’s going to transform the approach of the farmers towards agriculture. He noted that the farmers have begun adopting organic pesticides and fertilisers, marking a promising shift towards more sustainable and responsible farming-URN.
