A contradictory narrative has emerged regarding the alleged abduction of Samuel Nanoka, the National Unity Platform (NUP) chairperson for Sironko District, last week.
In an exclusive interview with our reporter on Monday, Mbale City Resident Commissioner Asumin Nasike claimed that Nanoka staged his own abduction to garner public sympathy. Nasike believes that opposition parties often use such tactics ahead of elections.
Rogers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, clarified that while the NUP filed a case, there was no mention of abduction or assault by unknown gunmen. Instead, Taitika stated that the report involved unknown individuals stealing 20,000 UGX from Nanoka.
Rogers Busiku, the NUP chairperson for Mbale City, disputes this account, calling the government’s actions “cowardly” and accusing them of targeting NUP leaders. Busiku questioned the logic behind Nanoka allegedly staging his abduction only to report it to the police and seek medical treatment.
Manjeri Namakonje, Nanoka’s sister, explained that they reported the incident to the Industrial City Police Station under case number 28/04/03/25 after discovering Nanoka dumped at Namasaba. She mentioned that her brother is currently at home but still reports to Mbale General Clinic for treatment of injuries sustained to his neck, chest, and legs during the abduction.
Similar incidents of enforced disappearances, unlawful arrests, and torture have been reported in the past, with opposition leaders and activists accusing the government of such actions-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
