Security forces in the Karamoja sub-region have jointly rallied the Jie and Nakitongo communities to end their long-standing conflict and foster peaceful coexistence. For years, the Nakitongo community of Turkana, located along the Uganda border, and the Jie in Kotido District have been embroiled in conflict over cattle raids and resource sharing.
On Friday, the joint security forces convened a community dialogue, bringing together the two warring communities to explore solutions aimed at addressing the conflict and promoting harmony. The meeting was marked by a sense of unity and determination, with both communities expressing their commitment to peace and cooperation.
Francis Chemusto, Commandant of the Anti-Stock Theft Unit, identified cattle raids, the prevalence of illegal guns, and the use of young children for grazing as major threats to peaceful coexistence. “By working together, we can build a brighter future for ourselves and future generations,” Chemusto said, reaffirming the security forces’ commitment to promoting peace and stability.
Brigadier General Wilberforce Sserunkuma, Commander of the UPDF 3rd Division, reminded the Turkana community of the presidential executive order prohibiting them from entering Uganda with firearms. He emphasized that the directive remains in force and warned that the security forces are implementing it strictly until the President recalls it.
He urged communities to report any violations, particularly those involving illegal firearms. Charles Icogor, Kotido Resident District Commissioner, underscored the importance of unity and cooperation, highlighting the economic and developmental benefits of lasting peace.
“By working together, the Nakitongo and Nakapelimoru communities can resolve conflicts and build a more prosperous future for themselves and future generations,” Icogor said, noting that the peace dialogue marks a significant breakthrough.
Mike Longole, the Mt. Moroto Regional Police Spokesperson, echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing that the renewed commitment to peace and resource sharing is expected to positively impact the region. “Our engagements demonstrate the importance of community dialogue and cooperation in resolving conflicts and promoting peace,” Longole said-URN.
