There was a scuffle in Nakawa Chief Magistrates Court on Friday ahead of Dr Kizza Besigye, Obeid Lutale and Captain Denis Oola’s appearance.

The scuffle started when the opposition’s Ingrid Turinawe was filming herself and other people she had come with to follow proceedings. It appears she also filmed suspected state operatives who were dressed in plain clothes inside the court.

They were unhappy and grabbed Turinawe’s phone. The other supporters intervened to rescue Ingrid’s phone.

What followed was an exchange of heavy punches and kicks between the suspected operatives and Besigye’s supporters. Several people were injured, and some were arrested.

Paul Kisule, one of the Mobilizers of PFF, was seriously injured as blood was seen oozing out of his mouth. Other people have also been badly injured, but most of those involved in the fighting were taken outside the Court and arrested by the Counter Terrorism officers. Their identities are yet to be obtained.

Turinawe said they have been overly harassed by the state machinery and wondered where they want them to go for justice.

Besigye’s case and his co accused is coming for further mention and possible committal to the High Court which has jurisdiction to try them.

On April 22, Besigye and Lutale filed a second bail application last month after Justice Rosette Kania dismissed their first request on April 11, 2025, citing a high risk of interference with investigations and the seriousness of the treason charges.

In the fresh application, which has not yet been heard by the High Court, the duo emphasised their permanent residences, Besigye in Kasangati and Lutale in Ssabagabo, and their willingness to comply with bail conditions.

The two have now spent over 180 days in custody on treason and misprision of treason charges.

Prosecutors allege that, while in Geneva, Athens, Nairobi, and Kampala, the suspects sought firearms, logistics, and funding to overthrow the Ugandan government-URN. Give us feedback on this story through our email: kamwokyatimes@gmail.com
